Funny Garbage: 10 Years of Making the Web Worth Watching

Willing to Try

Try Group

Project Overview

Dentsu, the largest Japanese advertising agency, approached FG to create an innovative online experience for its client, the Try Group, an educational institution. FG had the formidable task of designing a web site that completely challenged the conventions of traditional linear education, as well as transcending the cultural and linguistic limitations of the typical single language site. Additionally, FG chose to push the boundaries and significance of programming as a function of design.?

Working with renowned illustrator, Richard McGuire, FG developed a series of interlocking animations that allow the user to wander down various fantastic paths by making decisions based on their interpretation of simple abstract forms. The process of moving through these abstract symbols is both amusing and illuminating, reinterpreting and expanding the wonder of reading a great children’s book.?

The site’s achievement rested on a strong conceptual foundation and the unique design of the innovative, interactive programs found throughout the site. The graphically simple white-on-black animation and clever interactive programming made Willing To Try standout among the clutter of the web. The approach was so successful that the client also used the site as the centerpiece of its overall corporate branding.?

The site has won several awards, including Flash Film Festival 2000 Award (Best Interactivity), ID Magazine Interactive Media Design Awards 2000 (Silver Medal), New Media INVISION 1999 Award (Best of Show) and the London International Advertising Award Interactive Media 1999 (Award of Excellence).
