With November 2008 promising a pivotal Presidential election closely watched by millions, ABC News approached Funny Garbage at the start of primary season to create an interactive map allowing users to Calculate the Map to the White House. We responded with an engrossing Flash application that could turn any home or office into Election HQ. It's fantasy sport, D.C. style!
The Electoral Calculator followed hopefuls through the primary battles to November 4, enabling armchair strategists and amateur prognosticators to map out possible 2008 Election Day scenarios and tabulate the results. The map also provides a contextual review of recent election history by showing how states awarded their electoral votes in previous Presidential contests: revealing the party stalwarts, as well as those states whose voting tendencies have fluctuated.
To meet the requirements of a quick turn-around, Funny Garbage initiated a rapid prototyping approach for the map. Employing this iterative process, we met the challenge, launching an educational and extensible application after just three weeks of development.
